Miller School of Albemarle's course is a moderately technical 4-mile loop with a combination of gravel, grass, double track, and single track trails. It begins with a challenging gravel road climb before going up a steep double track climb and then a moderately challenging singletrack climb. Yes, lots of climbing to start out the race--this means plenty of time and places to pass. Riders then descend down a moderately technical descent before tackling "puke hill," a steep and challenging climb. This is followed by enjoyable and moderately technical single track trails. The course goes back through central campus (FEED ZONE OPEN IN ALL RACES AT THIS POINT ON COURSE) before looping through a grass to the finish line. The start and finish are in different locations. Lap times range between 16 minutes and 45 minutes.
REGISTRATION & PACKET PICK-UP
All pre-registered racers MUST pick up packet between 8-9:30 on Saturday, April 7. Yes, this includes racers who race later in the afternoon. Registration tent is located at the start/finish area. Coaches should have signed USAC waivers ready to go for all athletes on team. Racers will be issued chip timing number that will be used for the entire season. It is important that racers bring the same number to every race. Replacement numbers cost $25 each.
DO NOT arrive before 7:30 AM.
With over 400 riders, orderly staging requires the assistance of athletes and coaches alike. For RACE 1, call-ups will be done for Varsity riders only. The top ten returning riders from 2017 Varsity boys field and top 5 from Varsity girls field will be called up in staging. For other fields:
- JV BOYS: 10 staging zones--each team will be given two spots per staging zone. Coaches decide which riders go in each zone. Staging begins promptly at 12:40. No riders should be in staging area before 12:20. Rides who miss staging call up will be placed in back of field.
- JV GIRLS: Riders will be called in one at a time based on teams.
- MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS: 10 staging zones--each team will be given two spots per staging zone. Coaches decide which riders go in each zone. Staging begins promptly at 9:40. No riders should be in staging area before 9:20.
- MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS: Riders will be called in one at a time based on teams.
- ELEMENTARY BOYS & GIRLS: JV GIRLS: Riders will be called in one at a time based on teams.
Course is open to pre-ride on Saturday morning between 8:00 AM and 9:30 AM. Course closes promptly at 9:30. No riders are allowed to enter course after 9:30. Riders must have registered for race and signed waiver before departing on pre-ride. Race numbers must be displayed on all bikes of riders pre-riding course. Coaches may ride with athletes during pre-ride, but family/friends may not.
RACE WAVES & START TIMES
Each registered team is provided a 10x10 (10x20 for teams with over 15 riders) in the "TEAM ZONE" located next to the start/finish. Teams may bring tents and other equipment into their team zone. Vehicles and trailers are NOT allowed in this area, so teams need to carry equipment from parking area to team zone.
Parking is available in the large field on the left when you enter campus. Overflow parking is on upper field past across from the Bell Tower. Follow instructions of parking attendants and park in an orderly fashion to maximize use of space. There is NO PARKING on central campus or next to the start/finish. Please do not attempt to park in school parking spaces close to start/finish.
Porto-pots will be available in parking area. Additional restrooms will be open in Caton Hall basement next to start/finish line. Please do not go into any other campus buildings looking for restrooms. School is in session; dormitories & academic buildings are closed to race participants.
